Subject: Please act now to ensure access to life-saving breast cancer treatment

Email

Dear Minister Butler,

I’m writing as a member of your community because I’m deeply concerned that Australian women are being denied access to a life-extending breast cancer treatment, tucatinib (Tukysa).

This drug has already been recommended by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (December 2025), which means experts agree it works and should be publicly funded through the PBS. But right now, women still can’t access it because negotiations between the government and Pfizer have stalled.

For women with metastatic breast cancer that has spread to the brain, an incurable form of breast cancer, this isn’t just a delay- it’s time they don’t have. And this doesn’t just affect individuals. These women are mothers, sisters, daughters, friends, carers, employees, and active members of our community. When they miss out on treatment, the impact is felt across families, workplaces, and communities.

Without PBS access, the treatment costs around $64,000. That’s simply out of reach for most families. Women are being forced to either go without or consider more invasive and risky options, even though a proven treatment exists.

Meanwhile, women in countries like the UK and Canada have already had access to this medicine for years. This doesn’t feel fair, and it doesn’t reflect the healthcare system Australians expect.

I’m asking you to:

  • Push for urgent action to get negotiations back on track
  • Support immediate access at no cost for patients while this is resolved
  • Ensure Australians aren’t left waiting for treatments that have already been recommended for PBS listing.

Women are running out of time. This situation needs leadership and urgency.

Please act.
