Catherine was 49 when her life changed with a diagnosis of breast cancer.
What followed was a whirlwind of treatment, including mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy during the challenges of COVID lockdowns.
Throughout her journey, Catherine felt incredibly supported by her surgeon, oncology team, family, and friends. Through it all, Catherine held on to hope, supported by her medical team, her family, and a dear friend who had walked the same path just months before. That friendship became a lifeline.
No one understands like someone who’s been there
Over time, Catherine began exploring her options. She listened to podcasts and gathered information where she could. Then, she began to join online discussions.
When Catherine signed up to BCNA’s My Journey, she was able to access Online Network and meet peers who could be there with her every step of the way, offering advice and encouragement. The people Catherine met on Online Network understood how it felt to be overwhelmed by other people’s opinions, and encouraged her to make the choice that was right for her.
"It’s these women who helped me feel confident in my decision," she says.
Now, at 55, Catherine has had in-depth consultation with her surgeon and his team, and decided to go aesthetically flat in March this year.
"The appointment with my surgeon was full of detail, and they were completely supportive of my decision. I know a lot of surgeons aren’t supportive of women choosing to remove a 'healthy' breast."
Catherine found it invaluable to have a friend attend the appointment with her, to act as a support and take notes.
"That’s something I would recommend to anyone when having these appointments."
Looking back, Catherine feels deeply grateful – not only for her medical team but for the community that understood her in a way no one else could. Online Network gave her courage in the moments she needed it most, and reminded her that she had companions she could turn to through every challenge of her journey.
"I feel ready for this next chapter and the freedom it will bring."
