Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) hosted an Information Forum in Darwin, NT, in May 2023 for everyone affected by breast cancer, including their supporters, covering a range of vital topics.
BCNA members heard about current and emerging treatments to support living well with early and metastatic breast cancer, strategies to enhance physical and emotional wellbeing, the role of allied health, including services and support for lymphoedema management, and living well during treatment and beyond.
Guest speakers included Dr Narayan Karanth, Medical Oncologist, Gill Farrell, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Chloe Oliver, Clinical Psychologist, Amy Elson, Allied Health Team Leader at the Allan Walker Cancer Centre, Rachael Bell, Physiotherapist, and Marg Lavery, Clinical Trials Coordinator.
Dr Karanth has been providing oncology care in Darwin since May 2010. He provides comprehensive Medical Oncology care through the NT Medical Specialist consulting suites and inpatient consultations at both Royal Darwin Hospital and Darwin Private Hospital and Chemotherapy services.
Chloe Oliver is a psychologist with over 11 years of clinical experience. She has specialty in the areas of psycho-oncology and palliative care. Chloe has additional experience in geriatric mental health and is currently providing in-reach clinical services for Psych Solutions NT’s Residential Aged Care Program.
Amy Elson is a passionate Occupational Therapist and Lymphoedema Therapist with over six years of experience working in the field. As the Allied Health Team Leader at the Alan Walker Cancer Centre, she coordinates a team of professionals and advocates for Allied Health input during cancer treatment and into survivorship.
It was also an opportunity to hear more about the BCNA services and resources available, via a panel made up of local community groups and BCNA members, who shared their lived experiences.
