Double trouble take on the Gold Coast Double!
Serena and Katriona met through working as nurses in North West Sydney, and it was their passion for running that brought them together as friends.
Katriona was diagnosed with triple positive breast cancer in August 2011. What followed was three years of surgery, including a double mastectomy, aggressive chemotherapy, 6 weeks of radiation and with countless specialist appointments.
The two became friends after Katriona's diagnosis, but it was running that cemented their friendship. They have completed quite a few crazy adventures and events over the last few years and the idea of running the Gold Coast double came up last year, and BCNA was chosen as their charity.
Serena specialises in breast care nursing and says:
‘My role is to provide support, information, and education to those diagnosed with breast cancer. I see the patients on the ward after they have had their surgery, and help manage their post-operative care and discharge plan. I feel privileged to be part of the breast cancer multi-disciplinary team, and the patients are always grateful to have a specialised breast cancer nurse come to see them after their surgery’.
In July 2023, Serena and Katriona will be running the Gold Coast double to raise funds for BCNA. The event runs over two days with the half marathon on Saturday and the full marathon on the Sunday, a total of 63.3kms over two days.
