Seat at the Table: BCNA Consumer Representative Program
At Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) we believe that the most powerful way to bring about change is to draw on the views and experiences of people who have experienced breast cancer.
Since 2001, BCNA has run the internationally-recognised Consumer Representative program, Seat at the Table (SATT). BCNA’s Consumer Representatives work with breast cancer researchers, advisory committees, policy makers and service providers across Australia, ensuring that the diverse views, needs and experiences of people affected by breast cancer are taken into account in decision making.
About the role
A BCNA Consumer Representative is someone diagnosed with breast cancer who is trained to represent the broad views, needs and experiences of people affected by breast cancer and can speak on their behalf. BCNA’s Consumer Representatives do not simply express personal opinions. Instead, they speak for a defined, wider group of consumers.
The role is voluntary, and people diagnosed with breast cancer in all States and Territories are welcome to apply.
As a Consumer Advocate for BCNA I have been invited to be a member of a research team. My task is to highlight the women's perspective on the issues discussed by the team. This has included commenting on the initial grant application, attending the first team meeting, reviewing proposed interview questions and participating in regular phone-link team meetings. – BCNA Consumer Representative
Trained and supported
Our Consumer Representatives have completed BCNA's Consumer Representative Training program, a blended learning program of three online courses followed by a workshop.
BCNA Consumer Representatives have strong communication skills, knowledge of breast cancer issues and the ability to reflect the diverse needs, viewpoints and concerns of Australians affected by breast cancer.
BCNA Consumer Representatives are supported by the BCNA Policy & Advocacy Team and report back to BCNA on their involvement.

Types of opportunities
BCNA Consumer Representatives can contribute in many ways, including:
- Sharing insights about issues important to people affected by breast cancer with BCNA and other organisations/stakeholders.
BCNA Consumer Representatives work on a variety of projects, including:
- supporting grant applications
- helping with clinical trial ethics and consent documents
- providing consumer input on research projects
- assisting with clinical trial recruitment
- representing the views of those affected by breast cancer on advisory committees
- providing input into the design of services and supports for people affected by breast cancer
- assisting with the development of information resources and publications
- Contributing to BCNA’s research reports, submissions, campaigns and other projects
