Freckled pink for BCNA
As a breast care nurse with many years’ experience, Barb Cummins understands the importance of providing her patients with relevant, up-to-date, tailored information and she’s a big fan of BCNA’s resources.
“More and more of my breast cancer patients are accessing BCNA’s My Journey online tool and online network where they can share their experiences with peers who may be on a similar journey”.
2020 marks Barb’s eleventh year as a breast care nurse at St John of God Geelong Hospital in Victoria and she celebrated with a bang, holding a Pink Freckle day in May! Her concept was simple, but effective, with 300 large pink freckles quickly selling out amongst her colleagues.
Staff from all departments including nursing, maintenance and environmental services got involved and purchased the freckles for themselves and as gifts for their family members and friends. Pink Freckle Day was such a hit, Barb had to ration the number of freckles each staff member could purchase so there were enough to go around!
“It’s a reminder of how common breast cancer is for all the staff and everybody involved,’’ she said. “Because so many resources we use here come from BCNA, the concept was not something I needed to sell in. Staff here just know what BCNA do.”
Raising almost $800 from both the sale of the pink freckles and donations, Barb speaks about the day with such passion. She is already planning her next event, a Mini Field of Women, which she holds each October as an opportunity for staff, patients and their friends and family to reflect. What a hero!
