Submission to the Department of Health on the draft National Palliative Care Strategy
BCNA’s submission focused on the following key areas:
- Unmet information needs around palliative care
- Emphasising earlier referral to palliative care
- Ensuring equitable access to palliative care for under-served population groups who are facing disadvantage
BCNA is committed to ensuring that all Australians affected by breast cancer have access to the best possible palliative care choices throughout their illness and not just at the end of their life. We were encouraged to see that the draft National Palliative Care Plan seeks to increase awareness and understanding of palliative care and include groups facing disadvantage. It is BCNA’s view that the Plan would be improved by more strongly emphasising the role that earlier referral to palliative care services can play in improving health outcomes for people with cancer and their loved ones as we know that this is an information gap for many of our members.
