My experience nearly done - I hope forever!

After a year and two months I have finally come to the end of almost all of my treatment and now "just" continue on Tamoxifen for the next years!

Yesterday I even had my port-a-cath removed. Can't believe that they just gave me a local for the removal. In hindsight I should have asked for an anti-anxiety med. The experience was not pleasant - having to hear the sounds of cutting and feel the tugging... Then sent home with no pain meds! Just as well I have a few pain tablets left over from my mastectomy/reconstruction last year!

Breaking news out of the San Antonio Breast Cancer meeting is that 10 years of Tamoxifen offers a survival benefit better than 5 years for women with early stage breastcancer - http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/12/121205090917.htm

After only 2 months on this drug I am not sure if I will be able to handle even the 5years :-/ What about everyone else?

Hey everyone, today is 1 year to the date since I got my diagnosis after a day at the breast care centre filled with mammogram, ultrasound, fine needle biopsy and core biopsy. Yes, all in one day!

The clinic, where I had never been before, works on a "last man standing" system. Everyone is given morning appointments for mammos and then those that are clear get to leave and the others stay through each of the next steps. I was there at 9.30am for my mammo and was the LAST ONE TO LEAVE at nearly 5pm :-/.

Plastic surgeon follow-up appointment

Had my 3-4 week follow-up appt with my plastic surgeon yesterday, following my bilateral mastectomy with free TRAM reconstruction.

He was really happy with the way I've healed. Pretty much all the incisions are "calmed down" now. Just a couple of spots on my left breast incision that had these tiny plastic stitches popping out so his nurse trimmed those off.

I'm having to wear an unwired bra 24hrs/day for 6 weeks - so for another 5 weeks from now. Can't say it's comfortable having to wear it to bed. I hate the feeling of tightness around my ribs!

Mastectomy support inequality - public hospital, private patient

So I have just had a bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction in a public hospital as a private patient. My intake form says that my right MX was for breast cancer and my left was prophylactic.

I am also currently still a public patient with this same hospital for my ongoing oncology appointments and 3 weekly herceptin infusions.

Despite all this, I have had NO access to the breast care nurse during my stay and have been offered no resources or information, where women down the hall get a visit and resources.
