Healing scars

Posted by Balijo on 11 Aug 2012, 06:54PM

Just wondering if anyone has had success with Bio-oil used on scars as they are healing or if you've used any other vitamin E cream?
At present I cn only use on my drainage scars as my other scars are still taped up, but would like to start using something.
Thanks
Jo

Hi Jo, I have been using both vitamin E (from capsules I pierce with a nail file then smear on the contents) and Bio Oil on my scars. The scars are still quite distinct red lines (operation was in late April) but they are very flat and smooth. Don't know whether it's due to these products but possibly. I will continue to use them and I am hoping the redness will fade over time. Good luck. Janet.

Hi Jo

I was using bio oil and it was working really well for me.  I did try the Vitamin caps but obviously I got the wrong ones cause mine were very hard and you needed to try and cut the top off which wasn't easy so I gave up on them (just a hint to be careful you get soft capsules).  So I stuck with bio oil.  Was doing really well and will go back to it after radiotherapy(35 zaps in total) is finished.  The whole area and scars is looking very red and tender now but hopefully previous TLC will pay off for after my rads are finished and scars settle down again I hope.

I'm also using bio oil. I think it takes time but I have noticed that the scarring has softened in the areas where there were lumps - I think that's scar tissue breaking down. I use it twice a day ... wasn't sure how often or for how long I should massage it in but I am going to keep it up.

I've also been using Bio oil... not only on my scars but also on my finger nails.. I  find it works for me... check with your oncologtist when you can start using it....

Good luck

Hi Jo I spoke to my surgeon and he advised vitamin e cream and the cica care strips (silicon). So I am using a product called 100% pure vitamin e by a company called Invite. Available from the chemist for about $13 easier to apply than the capsules. I put that directly on the scar line and bio oil all over the breast area as I have expanders in at the moment so I am also trying to prevent stretch marks. I also managed to get the cica care strips which are $150 from a discount chemist extremely expensive but should last me at least two months. They are sticky strips that you wear 24 hours a day and prevent the scar line raising etc. I do find it hard to do all of it because when you have the oil on you can't put the strips on so it is a bit of a balancing act. Basically when I have had an expansion injection I focus more on the bio oil to prevent the stretch marks. My surgery was on the 30th May and my scars look amazing. I am really happy and believe my hard work is paying off. I think the surgeon deserves a mention also as his work is incredible. Good luck and by the way my surgeon also said massaging the area helps the healing. Surely any or all of the above can't hurt and helps make you feel a little more proactive with your healing. I also have recently had some dodgy looking sun spots removed and that Dr told me to use Bio oil. Hope this was helpful. Lara xx

Thanks everybody for your replies, Lara I too have expanders, but I never considered the stretch marks, of course it makes sense!
I will try find the vitamin E you suggest sounds good.
Thanks again.
