Information about early detection methods often does not explain the benefits of the different methods in a way that is clear and meaningful to women and GPs. Younger women have reported that their breast cancer was not diagnosed at an early stage because of a perception by GPs that these women are too young to have breast cancer. There is no reliable screening detection method for women less than 45 or for women with dense breasts.
- Clear and meaningful information should be made available to women and GPs about early detection methods for women of all ages and levels of risk as well as the importance of the triple test for women of all ages with breast changes.
- Research into methods of early detection for young women, women with dense breasts and women at high risk of developing breast cancer should be promoted and funded.
- Women with breast changes should request thorough examination and investigation from their GP.
- A Medicare rebate should be available for MRI screening of women at a higher genetic risk of breast cancer. This became available in February 2009.
