BCNA was saddened to hear of the passing of Jane McGrath on the morning of Sunday 22nd June 2008.
Statement of Support
23 June, 2008
Breast Cancer Network Australia pays tribute to the life of Jane McGrath and the example she and Glenn have set via their breast cancer activism.
Founder and CEO of BCNA, Lyn Swinburne, said so many important messages were communicated to the Australian public by Jane and Glenn and their partnership together.
'From the early stages of Jane's breast cancer Glenn demonstrated how important it is for partners to support women through their individual journey,' she said.
'I think Jane's passing will hit hard on other women living with secondary breast cancer. However, her story also gives hope. Jane lived a full and active life for many years even though she had secondary breast cancer,' Ms Swinburne said.
'I would encourage any woman needing support through their journey with secondary breast cancer to contact BCNA for a Hope & Hurdles Pack, which contains information, resources and support options for women and their families,' she added.
To order a Hope & Hurdles Pack free call 1300 887 340 or visit http://www.bcna.org.au/.

Tributes to Jane
The funeral for Jane McGrath was, as you would have expected, immeasurably sad. Gai Grayson and I felt privileged to be able to represent BCNA.
Personally, I feel a great sense of loss. Jane was my 'Poster Child' when it came to overcoming each hurdle with such humour and charm. At each diagnosis I urged her on, to overcome the enemy and win the battle. I quess it's because all of us who have played our part in the War, know it could be us one day, and we need to see that all things are possible.
But still, if only one good thing comes with the death of one so strong and positive, it is the awareness of the need to keep up the fight. To lobby governments for funding for quality care, research and early detection programs. I think all of us at BCNA who know this will take a deep breath, and leap straight back into the battle.
-Shirley Doust, NSW
I felt gutted when I heard about Jane's death. She was such a radiant, gorgeous, humorous woman, such a positive life force. I don't think anyone who saw her magnificent interview with Andrew Denton could ever forget her. She was a beacon of strength and hope for us all and she leaves a great legacy. May we all continue to live like her - with joy and love and the promise of great things to come.
-Jane H, VIC
It distresses everyone and especially those many of our friends who are living with the knowledge that they have a secondary breast cancer. Sad news like this one hits home. I hope the thought of everyday as a gift helps them to have the willingness to enjoy that special day.

I was devastated to hear of Jane's passing. I never had the privilege of meeting her but followed her life closely. I felt very depressed when I heard the news, however, I realise she would want us all to continue the wonderful work that she has done in her short time.
-Marie P, VIC
Jane's passing is indeed very sad. However, her strength, courage and tenacity to live a full and productive life while experiencing secondary breat cancer has, and will continue to be, an inspiration and example for so many women.
-Kay Francis, Medical Oncology Group of Australia Limited
Jane McGrath's passing has taken the wind out of my sails. She was such a beacon to women who suffer from secondary breast cancer. We can only pray and wish all the best for Jane's family and others in this situation in coping with such a difficult time.
-Lea C, ACT
I am saddened by the loss of a very brave woman, my heart goes to her family and friends. These things make you re-evaluate your own life and make the most of everything you have. Being a three time breast cancer and one cervical cancer survivor I consider myself to be very lucky, and try to make the most of life and as we all know things can change overnight. We all must keep fighting and find a cure for this disease.
-Sue S, ACT
It is terribly sad for someone so young to be taken by this terrible disease, especially when there are young children involved. We will all have to make sure her legacy is carried on and demand Breast Care Nurses for every cancer unit across the country.
-Robyn W, Sydney
We are all deeply saddened by the news of Jane's passing. She was a brave and inspirational woman. We feel very much for her husband and family.
