On the day choirs will sing or perform for their community whilst at the same time raising money for BCNA.

When there's an important survey being conducted, we will forward it to you by email and you can take part if you'd like to. We promise the surveys won't be too long, won't come too often and WILL be asking important questions to help researchers solve some of the puzzles around breast cancer.

Research Updates

Relationship of Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Outcome After Breast -Conservation Treatment With Radiation
In this article in the Journal of Clinical Oncology the authors looked at the role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in initial diagnosis and evaluation of breast cancer, and whether there is a link with overall survival rates. The sample consisted of 756 women who had breast conserving treatment and radiation over a nine year period from 1992 and 2001. This study found no difference between women who had MRI, and those that did not, based on 8-year rates of overall survival.

Helping Her Heal: a Pilot Study of an Educational Counselling Intervention for Spouses of Women with Breast Cancer
In this article in the journal Psycho-Oncology the authors discussed a pilot study which focused on educational counselling for men whose wives' had recently been given a diagnosis of early breast cancer. The men attended five clinically based educational counselling sessions which were designed to assist them to communicate and support their spouse with breast cancer, and also to improve their mood, anxiety, self-confidence and self-care. From the pre-post test results significant improvements were noted in the men's mood, anxiety, self-confidence and self-care. Post-intervention interviews were conducted with the wives and husbands and favourable changes were noted in how the men communicated and supported their wives, reduced anxiety levels and improvements in the quality of the marital relationship. The researchers argue there is merit in having the Helping Her Heal Program evaluated within a clinical trial setting.

Timing of Breast Cancer Surgery in Relation to Menstrual Cycle
In this article in the British Journal of Cancer the authors discussed whether the timing of surgery for breast cancer, in relation to a woman's menstrual cycle, has any impact on prognosis. The researchers carried out a multi-centre prospective study that reported on 3 year overall and disease-free survival. The researchers gathered data concerning when women had their last period before surgery and when they had their first period after surgery. The study concluded that the timing of surgery in relation to menstrual cycle had no substantial impact on 3-year survival rates.
