The Advanced Breast Cancer Working Party, formed at BCNA’s National Summit in February 2002, is a group of women with secondary breast cancer which meets to contribute to the implementation of strategies designed to meet the needs of women with secondaries. It is also an important resource for BCNA and its Consumer Representatives about secondary breast cancer related issues.
The Working Party consists of up to two representatives selected from each state and territory. Where possible, members of the Working Party are selected to ensure that a wide range of views and experiences are represented. The Working Party is resourced by a BCNA staff member.
Judy Shepherdson, one of the Working Party’s long standing members, says, ‘The message I would like to give on behalf of the Advanced Breast Cancer Working Party is one of hope and determination wrapped up with a dose of reality’.
‘My greatest inspiration has come from my friendships with other women living with advanced breast cancer. There are low times, we acknowledge this, and one can’t be inspirational all the time. Our fears are similar, even though our life circumstances may be different. We learn from each other - about treatment side effects, pain relief, practical advice, emotional counsel, and so often give one another strength of spirit, and courage which leads to empowerment.’
