Providing their individual experience

Role Description Example
Research & Surveys Women who are prepared to respond to research requests and surveys. This is often something which can be done from home and is unlikely to be more than a few activities a year.  Involvement will most likely be one-off activities such as responding to a survey. Some might require ongoing involvement.
Reviews Book reviews & BCNA resources. Reading a book & providing a written review to help inform & support women & their families.
 

Community Liaison

Representing BCNA

Role Description Example
Representative Attend community functions or local activities to promote BCNA. This may involve speaking about your personal experience of breast cancer, BCNA activities or presenting an award. Attending a local fundraising activity to pick up a cheque and speak to an audience about your personal experience of breast cancer and BCNA's programs ie. My Journey Kit
Media Representing the impact of breast cancer by publicly sharing your personal story. Speaking with a journalist about your personal story of breast cancer to raise awareness of breast cancer & BCNA programs & events which empower, support & link together women.
Attendee Attending a conference, launch or training event as a breast cancer survivor. Your attendance helps ensure that BCNA has a presence. Attendees are required to report back key issues that may be of interest to BCNA's members. Attending the launch of a project of work undertaken by the Cancer Council. Involves socialising with others who have attended & mentioning your involvement with BCNA as a Representative & where opportunity arises, BCNA's programs.

Representing women affected by breast cancer

Role Description Example
National/International

Appointee

High level committees that require the BCNA representative to have a thorough understanding of BCNA's policy, priorities & current issues. Representatives are briefed & report back to a member of BCNA's policy team. Appointed to a committee for the National Breast Cancer Centre who are reviewing the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Early Breast Cancer.
Representative Advocates are appointed to represent BCNA at a wide range of meetings/forums.  These meetings might address specific breast cancer issues, general breast cancer issues or broader health issues.  Representatives are required to be briefed before the meeting so that they can effectively represent the organisation & will report back following their attendance. Attending the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Medical Oncology Group of Australia over a 4 day period. Prior to attending you will have been in communication with BCNA's Policy Team & been provided relevant reading & material.
Presenter Involves presenting at conferences or meetings. This might involve telling your personal experience of breast cancer, as well as representing BCNA's policy priorities with the aim of improving services and treatment. Presenting the ‘consumer perspective' at a conference - speaking of your personal experience of breast cancer whilst representing all women affected by the disease & how the issues relate to BCNA's current policy priorities.
Reviewer Contribute to resources being developed for women with breast cancer. These resources might include books, brochures, websites etc. & might be produced by breast cancer organisations, health services, Cancer organisations or pharmaceutical companies. Reading a consumer information resource & providing constructive written feedback which reflects the needs of all Australians affected by breast cancer.
