For all our friends out there battling breast cancer, I would like to relate a story of hope, courage, fight, belief, strength, and the beauty of a woman who has been through it all and survived.
This is a story of a woman who has touched many of our hearts and who has given us the inspiration and encouragement to keep fighting when the road seemed too long and the journey too hard. I speak of Lesley Bawden, who is known to many of us and can bee seen out there on Daffodil Day, Pink Lady Day, Pink Ribbon Day ... approaching everyone with her big smile, crazy hats, and those twinkling blue eyes, gently persuading them to please support those who have breast cancer and are fighting for their lives.
To celebrate her ten years free of breast cancer, Lesley gave a party. She filled the Sandringham Yacht Club with those who had travelled the same road, together with all her friends who supported, loved and encouraged her during her journey. It was a very appropriate venue as fighting breast cancer is like setting sail into unknown waters. Riding the waves where there are hidden reefs, storms, and fear; always hoping for smooth and calm waters ahead.
The sea can be relentless, cruel and frightening, like the surgery we face, the months of chemotherapy, the weeks of daily radiation - leaving us tired and listless and then having to face a slow recovery. The white horses on the crest of the waves risk and fall much like the hair on our heads. Our journey is an unknown one. Where are we going? When will we arrive? When will the day come when the sea is calm and our ship has at last come home to the safe harbour we call ‘life'?
Congratulations, Lesley, do you know you are our hero!
