News Updates

Here is the latest news coming out of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Conference that was held in Chicago from 1-5 June 2007.

Molecular Signatures Characterize Early Stage Breast Cancer Arising in Young Women and have Prognostic and Therapeutic Implications Independent of ER Status
American Society of Clinical Oncology: breast cancer in young women has a poorer prognosis, is less likely hormone sensitive, and has yet to be defined as a unique biologic phenotype. The identification of molecular pathways unique to young women should enable refinement of treatment strategies.

Research Updates

The Safety of Breast-Conserving Therapy in Patients with Breast Cancer Aged ≤40 years
In Cancer: the objectives of this study were to examine the probability of local control after breast-conserving therapy (BCT) in a large population of patients with early-stage breast cancer aged 40 years and to determine which factors had prognostic value.
Abstract

Poor Outcome of Hormone Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer at Very Young Age Is Due to Tamoxifen Resistance: Nationwide Survival Data in Korea - A Report From the Korean Breast Cancer Society
In the Journal of Clinical Oncology: breast cancer in very young women (age < 35 years) is uncommon and poorly understood. The researchers sought to evaluate the prognosis and treatment response of these patients compared with women ages 35 to 50 years.
Abstract

Fertility issues
Discussion of Fertility Preservation with Newly Diagnosed Patients: Oncologists' Views
In the Journal of Cancer Survivorship: although physician discussion with patients regarding fertility preservation (FP) options prior to cancer treatment can provide important information for survivors concerning their future fertility, little is known about the extent to which physicians discuss FP with patients.
Abstract

Predictors of Ovarian Reserve in Young Women with Breast Cancer
In the British Journal of Cancer: ovarian reserve can be diminished following treatment for breast cancer. The researchers evaluated biochemical and biophysical parameters of ovarian reserve in their patients. Biochemical and biophysical tests of ovarian reserve were performed simultaneously in young (age 22-42 years), regularly menstruating women with breast cancer (n=22) and age-matched controls (n=24).
