Rural and Remote Working Party Print E-mail

At the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) National Summit in February 2002, a group of women from rural and remote Australia met to ‘network' and discuss issues relevant to them. Whilst a number of unmet needs were identified, the group agreed that further discussion and exploration was needed. Judy Shepherdson and Marlene Parsons successfully applied for a BCNA Community Grant in 2002 to establish a working party to identify issues and needs as well as strategies to address them. In June 2004, Project BREAST changed its name and became an official working group of BCNA.

The Working Party consists of up to two representatives selected from each state and territory. Where possible, members are selected to ensure that a wide range of views and experiences are represented. Membership of the Working Party is reviewed annually to ensure appropriate representation. The Working Party is resourced by a BCNA staff member.

Profiles of the current members of the working party are found on the Rural & Remote Working Party Members page.

Would you like to be involved in the Working Party?

We are currently seeking women to be part of the Rural and Remote Working Party in the following states or territories: Queensland, Tasmania, Western Australia and South Australia.

Are you:

  • A woman who has experienced breast cancer and who lives in a rural and remote part of Australia?
  • Prepared to represent BCNA's mission and policy at a state/territory level?
  • Willing to undertake relevant BCNA training?
  • Connected with other women who have experienced breast cancer who live in rural and remote parts of Australia?
  • Willing to attend regular meetings via teleconference?
  • Prepared to be an active member? By ‘active' we mean:
o consulting with others so that input into the working party is based on more than personal experience
o contributing time, thoughts and ideas
o assisting the Working Party coordinator and BCNA staff to implement strategies that address
identified needs and issues at a state or national level where appropriate
o liaising with stakeholders where appropriate to implement local action or initiatives.

If you can answer ‘yes' to these questions, and are interested in being involved, please contact the Rural and Remote Working Party coordinator at BCNA on 1800 500 258, or write to us at 293 Camberwell Road, Camberwell Victoria 3124, or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
