BCNA’s policy and advocacy work provides the foundation for our effective representation of, and advocacy for, those Australians affected by breast cancer. Much of our current policy development takes its direction from the recommendations of breast cancer survivors at our second National Breast Cancer Conference 'Still Making a Difference' 2004.
BCNA’s role includes ensuring that women’s voices are heard through the provision of clear statements and submissions to wherever breast cancer is considered and discussed. Key stakeholders include Government; health planners and funders; and the medical and scientific community about issues, expectations and outcomes which will make a difference for Australians personally affected by breast cancer.
Additionally, we ensure that the general community is also kept aware of the impact breast cancer has upon women and their families through our work with print and electronic media on a national and, sometimes, a state basis.
Our policy statements also provide national leadership to our 182 Member Groups and to our 29,000 individual members who make up BCNA.
With the prediction that the number of Australian women diagnosed with breast cancer will rise to approximately 14,818 by 2011, it is essential that BCNA’s policy work upholds breast cancer on the public agenda and ensure it is given the highest level of attention well into the future.
