Statement of Support
23 June, 2008
Breast Cancer Network Australia pays tribute to the life of Jane McGrath and the example she and Glenn have set via their breast cancer activism.
Founder and CEO of BCNA, Lyn Swinburne, said so many important messages were communicated to the Australian public by Jane and Glenn and their partnership together.
'From the early stages of Jane's breast cancer Glenn demonstrated how important it is for partners to support women through their individual journey,' she said.
'I think Jane's passing will hit hard on other women living with secondary breast cancer. However, her story also gives hope. Jane lived a full and active life for many years even though she had secondary breast cancer,' Ms Swinburne said.
'I would encourage any woman needing support through their journey with secondary breast cancer to contact BCNA for a Hope & Hurdles Pack, which contains information, resources and support options for women and their families,' she added.
To order a Hope & Hurdles Pack free call 1300 887 340 or visit www.bcna.org.au.

Breast Cancer Network Welcomes Government Announcment
8 April, 2008
Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) is delighted with Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon’s announcement today that Tykerb will be listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme (PBS) from May 1 2008.
Tykerb is a treatment option for women living with a particular type of secondary breast cancer, (also known as advanced or metastatic breast cancer).
Lyn Swinburne, breast cancer survivor and BCNA’s CEO, commented that this announcement is a wonderful outcome for many women who have been waiting a long time for this process to be finalised.
“The government’s decision to list Tykerb on the PBS removes the worry of a significant financial strain for women who are eligible for this treatment option,” Mrs Swinburne said.
With a membership base of over 27,000 – over 90% breast cancer survivors, BCNA has been advocating for Tykerb to be listed on the PBS so that women who are eligible, can afford this treatment option.
“It is imperative that Australia does not have a system where only wealthy families can access the best treatment and care for breast cancer.”
“As Tykerb is administered in a tablet form, it is also a convenient option for eligible women living in rural and remote areas, as they don’t have to travel long distances for this treatment,” Mrs Swinburne added.
Lyn Swinburne and a woman currently undergoing treatment with Tykerb are available for comment.
