Lyn Swinburne was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 and underwent surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy. Since that time, and as a result of her experiences, she has become a committed advocate on behalf of women with breast cancer and their families.
In 1998 she founded Breast Cancer Network Australia, of which she is presently its CEO. BCNA is now the peak national breast cancer ‘consumer' organisation representing 183 member groups and more than 23,000 individuals in all state and territories. BCNA currently has a staff of 20 and a vast number of volunteers working for the organisation.
Lyn is the creator of the Field of Women concept, which has now spread to international venues, and of The Beacon magazine of which she continues to be Editor.
A passionate advocate for consumer input, Lyn has represented women with breast cancer on a number of state, national and international committees. She is currently a Board Member of the National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre (NBOCC), having served previous terms from 1998-2006. She is a member of the NBoCC Implementation Advisory Group, the Cancer Australia National Advisory Consumer Group, and the Clinical Advisory Group to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons' National Breast Cancer Audit.
Lyn's awards include:
- Inducted into Swinburne University of Technology Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame, July 2008
- 2007 Melburnian of Year, August 2007
- Order of Australia (AM), January 2006;
- Finalist in the Australian of the Year 2006;
- Tattersall's Award for Enterprise and Achievement 2005;
- Equity Trustees' Not-for-Profit CEO of the Year Award 2004-2005;
- The Centenary Federation Medal, 2003;
- Induction onto the Victorian Women's Honour Roll, 2002; and
- Victorian Telstra Business Woman of the Year in the Community and Government category, 2001.
In 2000, Lyn was one of three Australians invited to sign the Charter of Paris Against Cancer at the Elysee Palace.
Lyn has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international breast cancer conferences, in New Zealand, Asia, the USA and Europe. Most recently she was guest speaker at Breast Cancer Network Japan's 2007 conference, held in Tokyo in October. She chaired the Third Breast Cancer Global Patient Group Summit, held in Stresa, Italy, in May 2006. Lyn attended a short course in non-profit management at the Harvard Business School in 2005, as part of her Equity Trustees Award prize.
